When shopping for furniture, most people start with a specific empty spot in mind: "I need a shelf that fits into this awkward gap," or "Is there a side table that matches this bedside nook?"

This AR tool lets you simply drag a 3D bounding box over empty space in your room, automatically reverse-searching a pre-crawled furniture catalog to find items that fit those exact dimensions.

Inverting the Workflow: From "Placing Items" to "Searching the Void"

Most AR furniture apps follow the same pattern: pick an item from a catalog, then test it in your room. In reality, though, you first have to pull out a tape measure, jot down the limits, and tediously filter search results across online stores.

This tool completely flips that process:

1. Box the Void: Point your phone and stretch a 3D bounding box directly over the empty spot you want to fill.

2. Fit Search: The app automatically queries and lists furniture closest to the specified width, depth, and height. The matching item renders seamlessly inside the AR box so you can verify the fit right away.

Down the road, it would be pretty slick to order custom-built furniture made to those exact dimensions on the spot.

I shared this on Twitter as a prototype of how furniture shopping genuinely ought to feel, where it went viral and was featured on outlets like Netorabo. It turns physical spatial constraints into a direct search query—a shopping interaction uniquely possible through AR.
