True-Scale Solar System AR
An AR walk demonstrating the solar system with true-to-scale size and distance
While there are plenty of solar system AR apps, almost none maintain a true 1:1 scale for both planetary sizes and interplanetary distances simultaneously.
Because of physical constraints, textbooks, posters, and museum dioramas consistently compromise: planets are drawn artificially massive, and the vast voids between them are drastically shrunk. To bridge this conceptual gap, I built an AR prototype that locks both size and distance to the exact same physical scale, allowing users to experience the staggering emptiness of the cosmos on foot.
Walking the Cosmos at 1:1 Scale
Setting the Sun's diameter to roughly 1.6 meters (about the height of an adult) immediately illustrates the sheer scale:
- Even Mercury is a trek: Reaching Mercury, the closest planet, already requires walking roughly 66 meters down the street. And it's tiny.

-
Earth is a tiny pebble: Walking about 170 meters brings you to Earth—a minuscule sphere barely 1.5 cm across.
-
Pluto lies 7 km away: Finding Pluto requires embarking on an actual 7-kilometer expedition across town.
By anchoring digital models to physical movement, the prototype turns an abstract astronomical concept—that outer space is overwhelmingly empty space—into an immediate, bodily realization.
